Education has a big role to play in animal welfare, and plays a key role in the work of Whangarei SPCA.
One of our mission statements is to promote animal welfare policies and preventative of cruelty to animals through education and advocacy.

"By teaching people a better way to care for animals perhaps incidents of neglect and cruelty will diminish," says Whangarei SPCA education officer Jacqui Howe.

"In my role I talk to schools and community welfare groups about animal welfare and the work of the SPCA. I cover everything from the history of the SPCA to de-sexing, euthanasia and the work of the inspectorate in the field."

Jacqui says a lot of the information teaches children how to properly care for animals and can be incorporated into the school curriculum.

"What is even more serious than the wrongs inflicted upon dumb animals is the habit of wrong doing, for doing wrong to animals is but a stepping stone to the doing of wrong to our fellowmen" - Joseph F. Smith
