An enduring friendship has been formed thanks to a Whangarei Leader SPCA Pet of the Week article eight years ago.
Mike Macrae, from Kauri, adopted his dog Holly from the SPCA in March 2001, after seeing the article in the Leader.
"We saw the story and had always wanted to replace our other dog, so we picked her out of the litter," he says.
The article featured three of nine puppies that had been dumped at the Ruatangata Transfer Station for several days.
Two of the puppies had already died.
Holly, who was named Kylie in the article, was described as shy.
"She's lovely, she's always been a well-behaved dog," he says.
Mr Macrae says the family was not worried about adopting a dog from the SPCA, even one that had been abandoned.
But he was worried that Holly lost her brothers and sisters when many of the litter had to be put down.
Mr Macrae says Holly is probably a mixture of labrador, hunterway and foxie.
He says she is a very cuddly dog.
"She's turned out to be an excellent little girl," he says.
Mr Macrae recently brought Holly back to the animal charity, along with a copy of the eight-year-old article which he had kept, so the organisation could see the end result.
