Whangarei SPCA’s biggest regular benefactor has received a Civic Honour Award from Whangarei District Council.
Jennifer (Jen) Brasting was one of four recipients, chosen from 16 nominees,
awarded a Civic Honour at a ceremony held at Forum North on August 26.
Over the last 20 years Jen has raised an estimated $500,000 for our centre via a second hand stall outside Arthur’s Emporium and regular garage sales. Councillor Shelley Deeming from the selection committee says they were inspired by the work Jen does.
“There are many who benefit from Jen’s tireless dedication,” said Councillor Deeming. “The unwanted or uncared for animals of our district obviously gain, but so do the region’s people. Jen keeps her stall prices low and many of her customers express gratitude at being able to purchase much-needed items at little cost.”
The work Jen does for our centre is almost a full time job. Every cent earned from her stalls goes to the SPCA, but stocking them is no easy task.
Jen sources, cleans and prices the many thousands of items she sells, and hunts for bargains at garage sales. She bottles jams, jellies and pickles from donated fruit to fill her stalls, and encourages friends, customers and relations to give her their unwanted goods.
“The animals of Whangarei cannot give thanks, or even understand the extent of Jen’s commitment to them. However, on their behalf, the people of Whangarei can now
acknowledge her years of selfless giving,” said Councillor Deeming.
