How to Help
How you can make a difference
DO YOU LOVE ANIMALS???
There are many ways you can help care for the thousands of unwanted animals that come into Whangarei SPCA each year:-
- Make a donation
- Become an SPCA Guardian
- Volunteer at our Second Chance Op Shop
- Help with fundraising
Become a Donor
You can become a Donor by either
1) Completing the Donation Form
2) You can become an SPCA Guardian
Each year SPCA Centres around the country help protect over 48,000 abandoned, abused and neglected animals that desperately need someone to care for them.
As a charity, we rely almost entirely on the generosity of New Zealanders to carry out our life-saving work, as we only receive a small amount of government funding.
SPCA Guardians are a special group of monthly donors that help us to take action for animals. Please click here for more details
We are looking for people who can help us save lives by fostering 'special needs' animals until they are ready for homes.
- Young animals
- Old animals
- Sick animals (each case is different, but you may need to have no other cats/dogs in your home if you are taking in a sick animal)
- Dogs with behavioural problems that need special care and training to help rehabilitate them
- Special needs animals e.g. on medication/post surgery
- Long term stay animals - ones who need a holiday from the SPCA
Foster criteria does apply. If you think you can help please download our foster agreement and bring it into the centre in Kioreroa Road or give us a call on (09)4389161
NB All foster costs are covered by the SPCA.
Volunteers needed to help with our Second Chance Op Shop
In February 2010 we opened Second Chance, an op shop raising money to help fund our animal welfare work, our vet costs, our education program.
We now have 2 Second Chance Op Shops, one at 32 Commerce Street, Whangarei, one on the corner of Kamo Road and Lilian Street. We are looking for volunteers who can offer a couple of hours (or more) a week working in either shop. If you are able to help please ring Sally or Anna on (09)4389168.
Help with fundraising
Can you spare a couple of hours a month at the weekend? We need people to help with BBQ’s, Street Appeals and other fundraising activities throughout the year. We need your help to raise the money to save lives.
The SPCA receives only a small amount of government funding to help us in our animal welfare work. Instead, we rely almost entirely on the generosity of animal lovers to support animals through the precious gift they leave in their will.
Bequests are one of our largest sources of funding and our on-going lifeblood providing income for many years ahead.
Leaving a gift to the animals is a fitting way to celebrate the love and companionship you have enjoyed during your own lifetime. Your gift can help ensure that the SPCA will always be here to help New Zealand's animals through our essential work.

Volunteer your time
Volunteers are the lifeblood of the SPCA. They are the amazing people who donate their time helping us care for the animals, they help with the maintenance of the centre keeping it looking tidy, an inviting place for people to visit.
If you can help with maintenance/washing/lawns please give us a call, we have an opening for you right now.
We get a lot of enquiries from people who want to work with the animals which is wonderful. Because of the special needs of many of the animals, the risks of cross infection of diseases and the health and safety regulations we now have a volunteer orientation and training program before you are able to join the team. Our orientation intake dates are March, June and September. If we have vacancies within the animal areas outside of the orientation intakes they will be advertised here.
